Zoo Photo Friday

The Birds!!!

These are the 3 kinds of lories/lorikeets they have in the aviary at the Jax Zoo. The black one was a young newcomer when we first "met" him, and he was the only one, but they got a couple more later. They're my favorites, I think. The greens are cool, and the red ones are gorgous, but a little aggressive. Not mean, just pushy little buggers. They're all pretty cool, though. Very noisy, too!

Tuesday Critter Showcase

I guess they weren't too thrilled about the photo-op, but see how protective the male is being. Looks like they're both frowning at us, doesn't it?

Farewell to an Old Friend

Our sweet black lab, Donald, died yesterday, at almost 14 years old.
He's been with my kids all their lives, so this is a difficult goodbye for them.
It was time, though, (his health was not great) and we think that he was ready.
We hope he's in doggie heaven with his sister, Daisy.
Goodbye, sweet boy.

Kudu!

Pretty, aren't they?

There's a little info about them at http://www.nature.ca/notebooks/english/kudu.htm

In case anyone's wondering, all of these animal photos I've been posting on Fridays & Tuesdays are pictures I personally took (and boy, you can really tell with some of 'em, but hey), and are free to share, without royalty or copyright worries. My kids and I go to the zoo fairly regularly, and almost always bring a digital camera, so I have hundreds of these pictures on my computer, and it seems a shame to leave them just sitting there, gathering digital dust, as it were...

Tuesday Critter Showcase

"Ahhhh. This is the life."

This is what the bears are doing every single time we go to the zoo.
But at least this time we could see their faces!
We usually get the rear view...

Snakes!

I don't remember what kind these were, other than that they were venomous. You can't really see it in this picture, but they had a really pretty pattern--sort of thin yellow crosscut lines, almost like a diamondback.

Speaking of snakes, there was a photo in our local paper yesterday of a 13 foot python (dead) that had swallowed a 6 foot gator, which was apparently too big for dinner, and the gator somehow broke right out through the middle of the poor snake
(not that the gator's day had been any better...) !

Tuesday Critter Showcase

I took this picture when I was in Massachusetts for my friend's wedding. I love crows. I'm drawn to them. I know they're scavengers, but I think they're beautiful.

I guess it's because of ravens. I really love ravens, and I think they're very smart birds. Crows look sort of like mini-ravens, and so I guess I just love 'em by default.

This guy stayed there for a few minutes, and let me take pictures of 3 different "poses".
He's a handsome fellow, isn't he?
